Focus on the Bakery and Pastry sector in Algeria.

Market overview:

Algeria is one of the world's leading importers of food raw materials. After Brazil, France is its second-largest agro-food supplier.

Algerian imports are dominated by cereals, which account for almost 30% (soft wheat for 20%, durum wheat for 7% and barley for 2%), followed by milk powder, oil, maize and sugar.

Since 2019, soft wheat has accounted for around 60% of French exports to Algeria, reaching €806 million in 2022. This predominance can be explained by the historical relationship between the two countries and by the consumption habits of the Algerian market, where bread is consumed in the form of baguettes.

In November 2021, the Algerian Interprofessional Cereals Office (OAIC) amended its specifications to allow the entry of punaised grain from the Black Sea. For the OAIC 2022-2023 import campaign (from 1 July to 30 June), France has just managed to remain the leading supplier, despite the rise in imports from the Black Sea.
