Market overview:
Algeria's agro-food industries operate mainly with imported raw materials, which represents a major challenge for the country.
For example, Algeria is the world's second largest importer of milk powder and the biggest consumer of milk in North Africa. In recent years, the country has tripled its stock of milk powder and cereals.
However, the government intent on working more with local raw materials in order to reduce the import costs.
Agricultural processing is under-exploited in Algeria.
Agricultural processing is the process of converting raw materials into finished or semi-finished products. This process offers significant added value for the agro-food industry, in terms of adding value to raw materials, preserving and reducing losses, product diversity, employment opportunities, food safety, etc.
Despite its key role in the agro-food industry, there is a break in the value chain both upstream (producers) and downstream (industry), which leads downstream players to import. The lack of infrastructure, obsolete facilities, lack of investment from private players, issues with the supply chain and insufficient technical skills explain this breakdown. The challenge for the country is to strengthen the weakest link in the supply chain.
